MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 8 Kansas volleyball team (13-1, 4-0 Big 12) swept the West Virginia Mountaineers 3-0 on Thursday night in Morgantown.
"Camryn established good balance offensively and our serving allowed us to be organized with our initial line of defense," said Kansas Head Coach Ray Bechard.
The Mountaineers were able to go point-for-point with the Jayhawks before pulling away with a 15-12 lead on their home court. The media timeout relieved the Jayhawks, however, because from there, the momentum began to swing back in there favor. Coming up big for Kansas was
Rhian Swanson, who earned her first start of the season and racked up five kills while hitting .417 in the process.
Camryn Turner also heated up early in the match, knocking down crucial back-to-back aces to push the Jayhawks ahead 20-18, adding to her three block, 12 assists stat line in the first set.Â
Also earning her first start of the year was
Reese Ptacek, who got things rolling with four kills, two blocks and a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage.Â
Set two kicked off with a 4-0 run for the Jayhawks, with Swanson notching three more kills in those first four points. Kansas would have no problems taking set two, with West Virginia calling their first timeout down nine points that would have no impact on the visitors' rolling momentum. Swanson eclipsed her career-high in kills, sitting at 11 total at the conclusion of the second set, while Turner recorded 15 more assists to contribute to Kansas' dominant offensive presence.Â
The remainder of the match would be smooth sailing for Kansas thanks to multiple Jayhawks stepping up to complete the sweep.
Bryn McGehe had back-to-back aces early on to set the tone, adding to Kansas' six total service aces on the night. Swanson added to her career night with one more kill in set three, and would end the night hitting .346.
Ptacek was a force in her first start as well, ending the night with eight total kills and a .538 hitting percentage, as well as leading the block with five total, joining
Toyosi Onabanjo, who also had eight kills and five total blocks.Â
As a team, the Jayhawks hit .311 and racked up 12 total blocks as opposed to WVU's .121 hitting and seven total blocks.Â
Up next, Kansas will head to Cincinnati for a meeting with the Bearcats on Saturday at noon. Fans can tune in on ESPN+ and via StatBroadcast and Kansas Volleyball social media platforms.Â
