OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. –  Three Jayhawk boats will compete at the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on Oct. 5-6 as Kansas Women's Rowing officially opens its fall season.
"Racing in Oklahoma City will provide us with good preparation for our Head of the Charles boats, as well as a break from the training in Lawrence," said Head Coach Carrie Cook-Callen. "Our boats have been battling well in practice against one another these past few weeks. We look forward to lining up against other teams in attendance and putting together a full race."
Despite the regatta being a two-day event, the Jayhawks will only be in action on Saturday as all three boats will compete in the Women's Collegiate 4+. The 2.5-mile head race will launch at 1:45 p.m. CT on the Oklahoma River.
Oklahoma City University is set to host 48 different clubs and schools for the 20th Anniversary of the Head of the Oklahoma. It's the 12th time Kansas has participated in the event, dating back to 2005.
Since Coach Cook-Callen overtook the program in 2017, Kansas consistently attended the regatta from 2018 to 2022. The last time the Jayhawks made an appearance was on October 1, 2022, where five boats raced in Women's Collegiate 4+ and all finished in the top 25, including a team-best fourth place. Three Women's Collegiate 8+ boats rounded up the racing for Kansas with top-10 finishes.Â
Kansas Rowing hosted its second annual Boathouse Battle on Sept. 27 which featured three Varsity 4 and two Varsity 8 boats racing against the KU Crew Club team in a 500-meter sprint. The event was a celebration of the KU Boathouse and allowed attendees to tour the boathouse and get a glimpse of the day-to-day experience of a rower's life.
