MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The No. 13 Kansas Jayhawks swept the Western Michigan Broncos Saturday afternoon to take two wins home from the Marquette Tournament, and to remain unbeaten in the 2024 season. Kansas was led by
Ayah Elnady, who had 15 kills, making it five straight matches with double-digit kills.
"We've got a lot of respect for Western Michigan and the brand they play," said Kansas Head Coach Ray Bechard. "They are extremely competitive and intense and they take a lot of pride in playing hard. We responded to that and plus a little more. I thought we played really well and read some in-game stuff well to finish off a very, very good weekend for the Jayhawks before 7 or 8 days of preparation."
Kansas topped the Broncos in the first set by a 25-22 score. The Kansas offense came through late in a back-and-forth set that saw 11 ties and four lead changes. Elnady led the way in the opening frame for the Jayhawks with seven kills and Reagan Burns tallied eight digs to boost Kansas to an opening set win.
Kansas kept the momentum rolling from the first set, defeating Western Michigan by the same 25-22 score. The Kansas defense highlighted the second frame, as the Jayhawks held the Broncos to just a .143 hitting percentage. Burns added another four digs and senior
Caroline Bien added three digs as well, helping Kansas take the second set and a 2-0 lead. Kansas is now 6-0 in the second set of matches, matching their overall record for the season.Â
Kansas would complete the sweep, defeating Western Michigan in the third set 25-20. Kansas capped off the 3-0 win while maintaining the back-and-forth style of the match. Bien finished the match with 10 kills and senior setter
Camryn Turner recorded 37 assists in a Jayhawk win.Â
