AMES, Iowa – Kansas bounced back with a strong 3-1 victory over Iowa State on Friday evening at the Cyclone Soccer Complex.
Kate Langfelder,
Jillian Gregorski, and
Emika Kawagishi all scored goals in the win.
Kansas improved to 9-3-2 on the season and 3-3-0 in Big 12 play. Nine wins matches the regular season win total from last season with five regular season games to go. The Jayhawks are also now 4-1-1 on the road this season.
"I'm really proud of our team today," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "We've had a tough stretch that has tested us, emotionally, and tried to create some energy on the road against a tough team that posed some challenges for us. Credit to our team for responding (to the early Iowa State goal). I think we did a really nice job in the first half of continuing to play on the front foot and to create dangerous opportunities."
Lie continued, "Kate (Langfelder) did a great job of getting on the end of a second ball with her left foot. She struck it hard towards goal, I think it maybe picked up a deflection, but it stayed low and got there. That was a really important goal to get before halftime…Jill (Gregorski) got on the end of a scrum in the box that was kept alive a few times. She did a great job of keeping the ball low to score. The third goal was similar. Caroline (Castans) zipped the ball into the near post, and Emika (Kawagishi) got her toe on it and helped the ball into the goal. We need to continue to learn how to create those goals and score those goals."

Iowa State (4-6-2, 1-5-0 Big 12) took an early lead in the 17th minute of the match. Megan Walters dribbled the ball into the box and took a shot towards the goal. Sophie Dawe got a hand on it, but it wasn't enough as the ball went into the back of the net to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.Â
Down a goal, Kansas drew a foul in the attacking third in the 26th minute. Livvy Moore took the free kick, which went to an Iowa State defender who headed the ball right to Langfelder, who took a strike with her left foot and deflected into the right side of the net for her first career goal.Â
The teams went into half tied at 1-1. Kansas held a 14-1 advantage in shots in the first half.
The Jayhawks came out of halftime with offensive pressure in the first 10 minutes. Langfelder crossed the ball into the left side of the box to Lexi Watts, who tapped the ball over to Gregorski. Gregorski then put the ball past the goalkeeper to give Kansas a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute of the match. The goal was Gregorski's sixth of the season.
Kansas didn't stop there, as the Jayhawks drew a corner kick in the 77th minute. Caroline Castans had the ball on the far side of the field and sent the ball towards the goal where Kawagishi redirected the ball into the back of the net to push the Kansas lead to 3-1. The goal was Kawagishi's first of the season.Â
The Cyclones tried to answer back, but the Jayhawks defense didn't let up as the match drew to a close for a 3-1 victory for Kansas.
Kansas outshot Iowa State 25-5, including 10-4 in shots on goal in the match. The Jayhawks did not give up a corner kick and held a 10-0 advantage in corners.
