LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas opened up its two-game home stand on Thursday evening with a 2-2 draw against No. 24 West Virginia at Rock Chalk Park.
Jordan Rowan and
Becca Smith were the goal scorers for the Jayhawks.Â
Kansas moved to 9-3-3 (3-3-1 in Big 12 play) this season and the Jayhawks are now 5-2-2 at home. No. 24 West Virginia moved to 9-2-3 (4-0-3 in Big 12 play) on the year.
"I'm proud of our response after going down early. We have a resilient group," Kansas coach Nate Lie said following the match. "However, many times this season we've gone down and came back and scored. They had gone pretty deep into their bench deep in the first half, and I felt like we had real control of the game."Â
"I think we wasted the first 20 minutes of the second half," Lie continued. "Then I thought the best stretch of soccer that we played was the last 20 minutes. I thought we were on the front foot, constantly, always getting in pretty advantageous pictures, but I would like to think of all those kinds of pictures we were able to create, that we would have been able to score. It was a match between two good teams, and I think we'll both move on."
In the 12th minute, West Virginia forward Taylor White crossed the ball into the box and it took a bounce off of a Kansas defender and went into the goal to put WVU up 1-0 early.Â
Down a goal, Kansas drew a corner kick in the 28th minute of the match. Caroline Castans took the corner and crossed the ball into the box. Olivia Page got her head on it and found Rowan by the left post and she was able to sneak the ball past the WVU goalie to tie the game at 1-1.
The Jayhawks weren't done in the first half, however. In the 37th minute, off of a sharp pass from Lydia Viets, Smith put her foot on the ball and directed it into the right corner of the goal to give the Jayhawks a 2-1 lead.
The Mountaineers responded right back with a strike from Alexis Ré in the 40th minute to tie the match at 2-2.
In the second half, the teams played evenly and couldn't break the tie. Kansas outshot West Virginia 6-5 in the second half and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In a tie game with 13 minutes remaining, the Mountaineers found an opportunity and fired a shot at the goal. Sophie Dawe then made a diving save to her left to keep the game tied 2-2.Â
The Jayhawks had one more chance to break the tie, as Kate Langfelder took a shot with 10 seconds remaining, but the ball went just right of the post to close the game.
