LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas soccer earned its 10th win of the season with a 1-0 shutout victory against Cincinnati at Rock Chalk Park on Sunday afternoon.
Lexi Watts scored the only goal of the match.
Kansas improved to 10-3-3 (4-3-1 in Big 12 play) this season and the Jayhawks are now 6-2-2 at home. Cincinnati fell to 3-7-6 on the year (1-5-2 in Big 12 play). Kansas has surpassed its regular season win total from a season ago and has its first 10-win regular season since 2019.
"I'm proud of the group for finding a way to win," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "I think there were a lot of draws around the conference today, so three points gets harder and harder to come by as you get deeper into the season. Great job to the team for finding a way. I thought we played relatively well in the first half, but weren't particularly dangerous."
Lie continued, "I challenged the team to have more urgency in the final third, and not settling as much. I think the group did a great job of that starting the second half. We haven't started second halves well in the last set of games, and I'm proud that we came out and made a statement of intent."
Kansas had multiple opportunities in the first half to score but couldn't finish. The Jayhawks held a 6-0 advantage in shots and drew four corner kicks but went into halftime tied 0-0.
The lone goal of the match came in the 59th minute. Jillian Gregorski had control of the ball at the top of the box off a pass from Emika Kawagishi. She then passed it to her left to Kate Langfelder. Langfelder was able to find Watts in front of the goal who then beat the goalkeeper on a shot to the near post to put the Jayhawks up 1-0.
The Jayhawks were able to keep Cincinnati from scoring, allowing only two shots in the second half, including none on goal. The two shots surrendered is the lowest of the season , and is the least since allowing one shot against Friends on Sept. 15, 2024. The shutout is Kansas' fifth of the year and second in conference play.
