LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas women's golf team is headed to Hockley, Texas, to compete in the Big 12 Championship at Houston Oaks Country Club, April 15-17. The Jayhawks enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed and was picked preseason to win the conference championship by the Golf Channel.
"I'm really excited to go back to Houston Oaks. We had a great tournament there last year at the conference championship, and our golfers are playing well," Kansas head coach Linsday Kuhle said. "We're looking forward to playing with Houston and Kansas State in the first round. We're hitting it well so I think we can continue to hit it well as the days get more windy out there."
Kansas will compete in a 13-team field that includes top-seeded Arizona State, along with TCU, Arizona, Houston, Kansas State, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, UCF, Baylor, Texas Tech, Colorado and Cincinnati.
The Big 12 Championship will feature three 18-hole rounds played over three days. Kansas will begin its opening round on Tuesday, April 15, at 8:20 a.m. CT, teeing off on hole 10.
The top 10 individual finishers will earn All-Tournament team honors following the conclusion of Thursday's final round.
Kuhle and the Jayhawks will travel with seniors Laren Clark,
Lily Hirst and
Johanna Ebner, junior
Amy DeKock, sophomore
Lyla Louderbaugh and freshman
Ebba Nordstedt.
The Jayhawks have had a historic season, capturing a school-record five team tournament titles. Kansas also produced four individual champions. Hirst earned her first collegiate victory at the Match in the Desert in Superstition Mountain, Arizona, while
Lauren Clark claimed three consecutive titles — the UCF Challenge, Wisconsin Westbrook Invitational and Yale Invitational West — and was named Big 12 Golfer of the Month for February.
"
Lauren Clark's been playing great," Kuhle added. "Amy has been a really solid fixture for us in the lineup and so has Lily. Lyla played great last week and you have to think we have a team of 5-to-6 players that can really put together a solid team score. It'll be a total team effort this week and I'm excited to see who steps up and can contend for a championship this week."
Historically, Kansas captured its lone conference title in 1990, winning the Big Eight Championship at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence. Since the start of the Big 12 era in 1996-97, the Jayhawks' best finish came in 2014 when they tied for fourth at the UT Golf Club in Austin, Texas. That 2014 team went on to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Regional and advanced to the NCAA Championship.
