LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas women's rowing team is set to take on top-25 competition at the Lake Wheeler Invite on April 25-26 in Raleigh, North Carolina for its final regular season road regatta.
The Jayhawks will face off against 17 tough Division I programs, including five CRCA ranked opponents of No. 13 Virginia, No. 16 Duke, No. 19 Columbia, No. 23 North Carolina and No. 25 Washington State.Â
"This event has annually provided a large field of very high level teams in attendance and this year is no different," said head coach
Carrie Cook-Callen. "We want our team to strive to be contenders amongst higher level competition to prepare them for the larger stake of the conference championship in May."
This season marks the fourth straight year that Kansas has participated at the Lake Wheeler Invite. Last year, KU had a strong showing at the event with the 2V8+, 3V8+ and 1V4+ all placing third in the final round of competition.Â
The Lake Wheeler Invite is a co-sponsored regatta by North Carolina and Duke. The Pocock Lake Wheeler Invitational Cup is on the line and will be awarded to the team with the most points. Points are earned by boats that place in the top three in their events.
On the weekend slate is three rounds of racing beginning with two rounds on Friday and the final on Saturday. Kicking off Jayhawk competition is the 3V8+ at 8:40 a.m. CT followed by the 2V4+, 1V4+, 2V8+ and 1V8+ with 30 minute increments between each race. This order and spacing of time will remain the same for all three rounds.
Kansas returns to the water after posting a total of four wins across its two day home Double Dual on April 11-12 at Wyandotte County Lake. Highlighting the regatta were the 2V4+, 2V8+ and 1V4+ all earning wins on day one, and the 3V8+ winning an intense battle over Minnesota on day two.Â
