LAWRENCE, Kan. – Coming off a Big 12 Boat of the Week performance, the 1 Varsity 8+ along with the rest of the Kansas rowing team returns to action in postseason competition at the Big 12 Championship on May 18 in Sarasota, Florida.
"The end of the semester, graduation and conference championships all align for this team," said head coach
Carrie Cook-Callen. "There is much excitement, appreciation for the journey and anticipation to compete our best at the right time. There's extra energy in the humid air here in Sarasota as we look forward to Sunday's championship opportunity."
Kansas will be joined by conference members No. 15 UCF, Kansas State, West Virginia, Tulsa and Old Dominion at Nathan Benderson Park. The Jayhawks are in pursuit of a first place team finish for the automatic bid to the NCAA Championships held on May 30-June 1 in West Windsor, New Jersey.Â
Racing begins at 8:15 a.m. CT with the 3 Varsity 8+ and will be followed by the 2 Varsity 4+, 1 Varsity 4+, 2 Varsity 8+ and 1 Varsity 8+ in 15 minute intervals. An awards ceremony will follow approximately 45 minutes after the final race at 10 a.m. CT.Â
Kansas will see familiar competition from the spring after racing against Kansas State, UCF and Tulsa at previous regattas. KU enters the Big 12 Championships riding the momentum of a 17-5 victory over Kansas State at its last regular season race on May 3. The Dillons Sunflower Showdown trophy remained with the Jayhawks for the second straight year after the 1 Varsity 8+, 2 Varsity 8+ and 2 Varsity 4+ Â boats accounted for three out of the five wins.Â
