SARASOTA, Fla. – The Kansas women's rowing team earned a team podium finish at the Big 12 Championships for the first time since 2016 behind a total of 52 points. Kansas placed third out of the six Big 12 schools from a trio of top-3 finishes. Contributing to the tie a program-best record was 3 Varsity 8+ coming in runner-up and the 2 Varsity 8+ and 1 Varsity 8+ boats placing third.
"A year ago we talked as a team about where we wanted the Jayhawks to stand at the 2025 championships," said head coach
Carrie Cook-Callen. "The simple message was on the podium and today we had three boats accomplish that. They cheered hard for their teammates and stood proud on the podium, they wore the brand of Kansas well today!
Kansas found a strong start behind the 3 Varsity 8+, as the crew's second-place finish of 7:15.845 tallied five points. The squad of

Gretchen Schmierer Knust edged out the trailing Kansas State boat by almost two seconds after the Wildcats beat out KU by 0.27 in a photo finish at the Dillons Sunflower Showdown on May 3. It's the highest placement an individual KU boat has placed at the Big 12 championship since the 3 Varsity 8+ second-place at the 2022 and 2023 championships.
In the following races, the Jayhawks posted a total of seven more points as the 2 Varsity 4+ boat added three with a fourth place finish with a 7:52.900 time. Members of the boat included

The fourth race of the day featured the 1 Varsity 4+. Kansas and Old Dominion remained in contention for a top-four finish throughout the race. In the final stretch, the Jayhawks secured a fifth-place finish, adding four points to the leaderboard for Kansas behind
Kyra Kavouridis, Abby Steffen,
Izzy Smikahl,
Emerson Linthicum and
Jacie Goff's performance.Â
Kansas earned a top-three finish in the 2 Varsity 8+, the second-to-last race of the day. The Jayhawks edged out Kansas State, West Virginia, and Old Dominion to claim third place, crossing the line with a time of 6:55.107. Paving the way to the finish line was

The 1 Varsity 8+ race served as the grand finale and most anticipated event of the day. The Jayhawks entered the race with momentum, having earned Big 12 Boat of the Week honors on May 7, 2025, following a standout performance during the Sunflower Showdown on their home course.
Kansas remained consistent throughout the 2000-meter race and showed resilience down the stretch to secure a top finish. The 1V8+ crew — coxswain

Amber Cayci,

Laura Teska — surged ahead of Kansas State, West Virginia, and Old Dominion to clinch a third place finish and a 6:47.506 time for the Jayhawks.
This race contributed to the 52 total points Kansas earned on the day to securing a third-place overall team finish. It ties the program's best finish where the Jayhawks also placed third in 2009, 2010, 2012 , 2013, 2014 and 2016.
Following the conclusion of all six races, the All-Big 12 Rowing Team was announced, with four Jayhawks earning honors, the third-most selections behind UCF and Tulsa. Kansas was represented entirely by seniors: Cayci,  Larson,  Owens, and  Wistuba. It marks the second consecutive All-Big 12 selection for Wistuba.
As for Kansas rowing honors,
Alessandra Vedder was named Oarswoman of the Year and
Audrey Owens as the Coxswain of the Year.
