LAWRENCE, Kan. - After winning the season opener on Thursday, No. 25 Kansas will stay at home to play South Dakota State on Sunday afternoon at Rock Chalk Park. Kansas (1-0) began its season with a high-scoring 5-2 win over Missouri State on Thursday night. The Jayhawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime and never looked back against the Bears. The five goals scored were the most in a season opener in program history.
"Thursday night was a great start to the season against Missouri State," Kansas coach Nate Lie said. "We have a strong South Dakota State team coming up on Sunday, a team that gave us a tough run last season, so it will be another good matchup for us as we look to get better every day."
Sophomore Jillian Gregorski opened her season by scoring two goals, while senior Lexi Watts scored her first goal of the season after leading the team in goals scored last season. Freshman Faith Johnston scored her first goal as a Jayhawk in her debut. Sophomore Kate Langfelder recorded two assists and junior Caroline Castans tallied one goal and one assist.Â
The Jayhawks had 26 players to log minutes, with 12 of them making their Kansas debut. Kansas outshot Missouri State 23-5, 12-3 in shots on goal.
ABOUT SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
South Dakota State (0-0-1) kicked off its season on Thursday night at Missouri and played to a 1-1 draw. The Jackrabbits are coming off a 15-5-2 season and won the Summit League Tournament Championship. They were picked to finish second in the Summit League preseason poll.

Kansas leads the series 6-0-1 against South Dakota State, with a 4-0-0 mark in matches played in Lawrence. The last matchup came on Aug. 15, 2024, in Brookings, South Dakota, in the season opener last year, in which Kansas pulled out a 2-1 win.
