LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 25 Kansas soccer shutout South Dakota State 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Rock Chalk Park. Junior
Livvy Moore scored the only goal of the match in the 57th minute and sophomore goalkeeper
Sophie Dawe made three saves to secure the shutout. Kansas improved to 2-0-0 on the season following the first week of action.
"The best team tends to win on Thursday night, and the tougher team tends to win on Sunday," head coach
Nate Lie said. "Nobody feels as fresh as they did on Thursday and you just have to still try to execute, still try to buy into and epitomize your identity, and it's more difficult. Today was a tough one, a great opponent. I thought we had our opportunities early in the game, when opportunities come in more often and more easily, we need to kind of take control and maybe put a couple of goals on the board."
Lie continued, "We had some winning plays. Kudos to Sophie as a goalkeeper in our sets, this is the part of our team that's still probably lacking the most experience, and they were able to pitch a shut out against a very good team."
Both teams battled throughout the first half, with the Jayhawks dominating the possession for the majority of the time. Junior Saige Wimes had a pair of good looks but she was unable to capitalize on both attempts. The Jayhawks put up 12 shots in the first half, compared to South Dakota State only getting off two shots. Both teams entered the break tied at 0-0.
South Dakota State (0-1-1) continued to hang around in the second half. Sophomore Jillian Gregorski and Wimes had great looks at the goal early, before Moore scored the first goal of the game on a shot just inside the left post in the 57th minute, to give Kansas the 1-0 lead. A transfer from Oregon, Moore's goal was her first goal as a Jayhawk. Junior Caroline Castans recorded her second assist of the season on the play.
Kansas carried this momentum throughout the rest of the game and continued to dominate the possession and pace of the match. The Jayhawks continued to be aggressive with Wimes and Gregorski continuing to get good looks at the net. Gregorski proceeded to draw a penalty kick in the 83rd minute, but was unable to convert after an impressive save by the South Dakota State goalkeeper.
Kansas finished the contest with 16 shots, compared to South Dakota State who finished the game with only five shots. Dawe kept the net clean for Kansas, recording three saves on all three of the Jackrabbits shots on goal for the game.
