LYNCHBURG, Va. – For the first time in school history, No. 21 Kansas finished non-conference play unbeaten after a 3-2 victory against Liberty at Osborne Stadium on Sunday.
Olivia Page,
Mary Sola, and
Jillian Gregorski all scored goals in the Jayhawks win.
Kansas improved to 6-0-2 through the first eight matches, which marks the longest unbeaten streak to start a season since 2018. The Jayhawks will begin conference play this upcoming week at Oklahoma State.
"We knew when we scheduled two road games in back-to-back weeks that it would be a challenge," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "I'm really proud of the team for making it to the finish line and getting the victory."
The Jayhawks opened up the scoring first on Sunday. On a corner kick, Gregorski directed a header that was saved by the goalkeeper but not without a rebound. Saige Wimes controlled the rebound and took a shot on goal that was again saved by the goalkeeper. The save caused another rebound and Page charged in to clean up the rebound with a shot into an empty net in the 10th minute. The goal was her first of the season and gave Kansas an early 1-0 lead.
Liberty (5-3-2) answered back in the 16th minute. Gabby Miranda took a shot that was originally saved by
Sophie Dawe, but the rebound went right back to Miranda who was able to sneak her second attempt past Dawe to tie the match at 1-1.
Kansas took the lead again later in the first half. In the 27th minute, Sola received a pass from Jocelyn Herrema on the right side of the box and snuck it past the goalkeeper to score her second career goal. Kansas took a 2-1 lead into the half.
The Jayhawks kept the momentum going in the second half as the Jayhawks stretched their lead. Wimes took a shot that was saved by the goalkeeper but deflected straight to Gregorski for an easy tap in goal. The goal was her fourth of the season and came just three minutes into the second half to give Kansas a 3-1 lead.
The Lady Flames cut into the Jayhawks lead with a late goal by Halle Engle in the 83rd minute of the match to make it a one-goal game at 3-2. Kansas was able to close out the match in the final minutes to secure a 3-2 win and an unbeaten non-conference season.
Kansas outshot Liberty 17-9 and 13-4 in shots on goal. The Jayhawks also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
