MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas Track & Field team traveled to Manhattan, Kan. for the DeLoss Dodds Invitational, where the Jayhawks had a handful of impressive individual performances and two new school records.
Redshirt senior John Swabik broke the Kansas school record in the men's heptathlon, while Aaliyah Moore broke the Kansas school record in the women's 1,000 meter run. Kansas won four events and had 21 podium finishes over the span of two days.Â
The Jayhawks had a strong weekend and the coaching staff felt like they had made good progress. "I thought we did a great job in all aspects. Our multi athletes and pole vaulters did great and we did a some things well on the track. I thought we took advantage of an opportunity to compete and showed a lot of improvement from last meet. I was proud of how we represented and it was just overall a great meet for us." Kansas head coach Stanley Redwine said after the meet.
Kansas opened Friday with a slew of impressive performances, highlighted by the Kansas women's pole vaulters. Mason Meinershagen set a season best 4.47 meters (14-8 ft.) clearance to win the World Athletics Bronze Continental Tour Pole Vault Invite. On her way to her third win of the season, Meinershagen took down pole vaulters from across the continent.
In the women's open pole vault, Madison Snody took home second place with her season best 4.07 meters (13-4.25 ft.) vault. Barbora Stejfova placed second in her first competition as a Jayhawk in the women's weight throw. Stejfova had a best mark of 20.14 meters (66-1 ft.).Â
Swabik set a new Kansas heptathlon record in his first competition as a Jayhawk by scoring 5,854 points. Swabik narrowly beat his teammate Tayton Klein, with just three points separating them. On Friday, Swabik scored 861 points in the 60 meter dash, 893 in the long jump, 673 in the shot put and 831 in the high jump. On Saturday, he completed his record setting performance with 932 points in the 60 meter hurdles, 790 in the pole vault and 884 in the 1,000 meter dash, overcoming the 25 point deficit he had to Klein entering the final event. Swabik's 5,854 points broke Alexander Jung's previous record of 5,797 points that he set at the Big 12 Championships in 2025 and set a 424 point personal best and a facility record.Â
Klein also put on a performance that ranked second in school history, scoring 5,851 points to bring home second place. The senior captain had led throughout most of the meet with scores of 889, 945, 668. 776, 908, 819 and 856. In the end, he set a new 218 point personal best with the second best heptathlon performance in Kansas history.
"It was great to see those two battle it out." Kansas multi events coach Paul Thornton said, "This [multis] group is really close with each other and so they were able to compete and drive each other to be better and better throughout the meet, and that was really special to see… Seeing John come in and set a 400 point personal best and school record in his first time wearing a Jayhawks uniform was awesome, and you really never see a multi event come down to just three points, but that speaks to how both guys were spectacular and kept pushing each other throughout the meet."
On the track, Aaliyah Moore broke another Kansas record in the 1,000 meter run. Moore, who broke the Guyana women's mile record on Jan. 16., added two more records with a 2:46.49 second place finish in the 1,000 meter run. That time was good enough to break Lauren Bonds' previous record of 2:46.60 set at the 2009 Big 12 Championship, and also set a new Guyana 1,000 meter record.
Pearl Awanya finished second in the women's 400 meter dash invite with a time of 53.81, while Abree Winfrey and Sidney Smith finished second and third in the 600 yard run. Winfree's 1:23.27 time set a new personal best.
The Jayhawks dominated the men's mile with Hobbs Campbell and Reagan Kibet finishing first and second in the open, while Quenton Walion and Ryo Higuchi placed top two in the invite. Kibet, Walion, and Higuchi all set personal bests with times of 4:10.79, 4:00.31 and 4:00.58, respectively.
The Kansas men's pole vaulters swept the podium with Ashton Barkdull and Anthony Meacham clearing 5.62 meters (18-5.25 ft.) to finish first and second, while Bryce Barkdull cleared 5.22 meters (17-1.25 ft.) in his first competition of the season. Barkdull tied the meet record, while Meacham set a personal best.
The Jayhawks wrapped up the meet with two second place finishes in the men's and women's 4x400 meter relays.Â
Kansas totaled four wins, 21 podium finishes, and 33 personal bests throughout the meet. The Jayhawks will regroup before they travel to Ames, Iowa to compete in the ISU Classic on Friday, Feb. 6.
