LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 13 Kansas Baseball will host a regional at Hoglund Ballpark this week for the first time ever. Kansas will face Northeastern in the first game of the regional on Friday at 12 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
Â
"It's four unbelievable teams that have all played really good baseball," head coach
Dan Fitzgerald said. "I think where you play certainly matters, but it's a super challenging draw. This is an incredibly tough field in the NCAA Tournament."
Â
Kansas (42-16, 22-8 Big 12) is appearing in the postseason in back-to-back seasons for just the second time in school history and the seventh time overall. KU received an automatic bid after becoming the first team to win the Big 12 regular season title outright and the Big 12 Tournament title since Texas in 2009.
Â
The Jayhawks went 3-0 in the conference tournament. That included a 9-0 shutout of No. 9 West Virginia on May 23 in the championship game. The shutout was the second all-time in the Big 12 title game (2005). In the quarterfinals,
Savion Flowers hit a walk-off solo home run in the 10th inning to lift Kansas to an 8-7 win
Â
Kansas won the Big 12 title outright with 22 league wins this season. It was the first regular season conference championship for Kansas since 1949 as a member of the Big Seven and only the fourth in school history (1923, 1924, 1949).
Â
KU has hit 102 home runs this season, only two shy of last year's school record of 104. Kansas has four hitters with at least 10 home runs this season (
Tyson LeBlanc – 21,
Josh Dykhoff – 15,
Augusto Mungarrieta – 15,
Tyson Owens – 14). LeBlanc has hit a team-high 21 home runs this season, tied for the most in a season in KU history with Tony Thompson in 2009.
Â
Northeastern (38-20, 22-8 CAA) won the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament for the second consecutive year to punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. After dropping the first game of the CAA tournament, Northeastern won the next four games to claim its second straight CAA Tournament title. Northeastern leads the country with 210 stolen bases this season. The next closest team in Division I baseball is 29 stolen bases behind.
