BOSTON, Mass. – For the third consecutive year, the Kansas Women's Rowing team is set to embark on a trip northeast to compete at the world's largest three-day regatta – the Head of the Charles in Boston, Massachusetts. The event will feature more than 11,000 rowers from around the world beginning on Oct. 18 and concluding on Oct. 20.
"Our squad is excited to again be a part of an event the size of the Charles," said Head Coach Carrie Cook-Callen. "We look forward to being surrounded by peers in our sport and competing at a high level for Kansas."
In the history of the 59 year event, this season marks just the fourth time Kansas has participated. Last year, the Jayhawks had one boat compete in the Women's Club Eight that finished with a time of 16:41.97. This year, two Kansas boats will hit the water of the Charles River on separate days – the Women's Club Fours on Saturday and the Women's Championship Fours on Sunday.
Competing in the crimson in blue for the Women's Club Fours is the squad of Sarah Sutton, Ava Black, Kara Lyons, Karly Larson and Gracie Shepherd. The group will kick off weekend action for Kansas with a race time at 11:53 a.m. CT on Saturday. Following on Sunday at 12:10 p.m. CT is the Women's Champion Fours composed of Audrey Owens, Emma Wistuba, Alessandra Vedder, Katia Ustiuzhanina, and Amber Cayci.
The rowing team is coming off a strong start after being the only school to have all of its boats placed in the top-10 of the Women's 4+ Collegiate race at the Head of the Oklahoma on Oct. 5. Leading the way was the Varsity 4 A boat winning the race with a time of 15:47.20 and beating the second place boat by nearly eight seconds. The Varsity 4 B boat finished in seventh and the Varsity 4 C boat shortly followed in eighth.
