HOUSTON – The No. 7-seeded Kansas men's golf team finished in fourth place with a 2-2-1 record at Big 12 Match Play at The Clubs at Houston Oaks.
The Jayhawks, who knocked off No. 2-seeded Oklahoma State in the Pool B Championship on Tuesday, dropped their third-place match Wednesday morning against the top-seeded Arizona State Sun Devils 2-3.
"I thought we played fairly solid today but couldn't get a third point," said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. "Gunnar (Broin) and Luke (Honner) won today and controlled their matches from start to finish."
Gunnar Broin and Luke Honner both recorded dominant wins for the Jayhawks on Wednesday, as Broin defeated ASU's Nicholas Prieto 4&2, and Honner topped Michael Mjaaseth 5&4. Broin finished the week with a 3-2 record, and Honner ended the week with a 2-1-2 record.
Despite losing his match on Wednesday with the Sun Devils, Will King finished with three match wins, and two losses, tying Broin for the best record on the team over the five matches this week.
Max Jelinek and Noah Holtzman both dropped their final match of the week despite good efforts against top-ranked players from the Sun Devils. The pair of Jayhawks finished the week with 1-3-1 records, despite playing some of the best competition that the Big 12 Conference has to offer.
"Overall, it was a solid performance this week with a fourth-place finish," said Bermel. "Match play is a different style of golf and we handled it fairly well. A lot of golf in four days, but our guys played hard every day."
No. 6 BYU took home the Big 12 Match Play crown, defeating No. 13 Baylor in the championship match 4-1. Kansas finished the tournament in fourth place, improving six spots from last year's 10th-place finish and three spots better than their seventh-place seeding.
