LAHAINA, Hawaii - Kansas Men's Golf sits in fifth place after the first round of play at the Ka'anapli Classic in Hawaii. The Jayhawks were led by sophomore Max Jelinek who carded an opening round 65 (-6).
Junior Will King finished behind Jelinek with an opening round of 67, sophomore Noah Holtzman carded a three-under round of 68, senior Gunnar Broin shot two under par, and junior Luke Honner opened his tournament with a 70, good for one under par.
"Had a solid start to the event today. Really happy with Max today, he played solid all day," Kansas Head Coach Jamie Bermel said. "Will and Noah were pretty steady as well and Gunnar and Luke also finished under par. We had perfect weather today and if that is the case the next two days we will need to make some birdies."
Jelinek headlined the Jayhawks with his impressive round of 65. Jelinek's round was highlighted by a back nine score of 29, good for five under on the back nine alone.
Will King added another impressive round to his fall season, by firing off an opening round 67, good for four under par. King tallied a clean front nine of six pars and three birdies and then proceeded to add two more birdies on the back nine to card a 67.
Noah Holtzman finished just one shot behind King, shooting a first-round 68. Holtzman, like King, also carded a clean front nine, as Holtzman added two birdies on his front side. On the back nine, Holtzman played steady, grabbing two more birdies on his way into the clubhouse to shoot 68.
Gunnar Broin also carded an under-par round of two-under-par in the opening round. Broin tallied four total birdies in his first round, coupled with 11 pars, Broin was able to get into the clubhouse with a 69.
Luke Honner chipped in an opening round of 69, which is good for one under par. Honner had 13 pars and two birdies and continued to play steady golf on his way to shooting one under par in the opening round.
After one round of play, No. 2 Oklahoma leads the way at 20 under par. North Florida shot 18 under par for the opening round, and the Ospreys find themselves in second place. No. 5 LSU rounds out the top three, as the Tigers shot 16 under par.
