GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – After a one-under round of 283 in Tuesday's second round, the Kansas men's golf team sits in a tie for seventh place with 18 holes to play at the Folds of Honor Collegiate at American Dunes Golf Club. The Jayhawks jumped four spots in the standings and were one of just three teams under par for the second round.
Kansas shot -1 as a team in Tuesday's second round, highlighted by sophomore Max Jelinek's two-under 69. The Jayhawks relied on early birdies to propel themselves up the tournament leaderboard, jumping four spots on the day. Junior Will King was also under par, firing a one-under 70. Sophomore Noah Holtzman and graduate senior Gunnar Broin both fired rounds of 72 (+1), while junior transfer Luke Honner added a four-over 75.
"I'm really happy with the bounce back today," said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. "We got off to a good start today and played steady, disciplined golf. Max was under par as well as Will King. Gunnar and Noah hung in there and helped us out, too. We need another great effort on Wednesday as well."
Alabama leads the 15-team field at -5, followed by Illinois (-4), Notre Dame (+2), Michigan State (+3) and Texas (+5) to round out the top five.
Jelinek began his round steady with seven-straight pars, finding a birdie on his eighth hole and a par on his ninth to shoot a one-under 35 on his front nine. Jelinek kept the momentum going on the back side with birdies on holes one and four, coupled with six pars on his back nine to shoot a two-under 69. Jelinek climbed 21Â spots and is T30 at +5.
King opened his Tuesday round with two birdies on his front nine, carding a one-under par 35 on his way out. King remained steady, and rode a back nine with seven pars and a birdie, to an even back nine for a one-under 70 to join Jelinek with a scorecard under par.
Broin continued his steady play for the Jayhawks, firing five pars and a birdie to get his front nine started. Broin would shoot a 38 over his first nine hole, but would rebound and shoot a one-under 34 on his back side. Broin shot a one-over 72 in the second round and is T20 at +3 for the event. Â
Holtzman tallied three birdies on the front nine to shoot even par on that side. On the day, Holtzman totaled eight pars on the back nine for a round of 72 (+1), climbing four spots to sit T23 at +4.
Honner started his second round with a birdie on his first hole of the day. On his way out, Honner would add another birdie to his scorecard to make a one-over 37 on the front side.
