CINCINNATI, Ohio – After the opening 36 holes of the Bearcat Invitational at Coldstream Country Club on Monday, the Kansas men's golf team is in second place at -2 with Gunnar Broin and Will King in a tie for third place individually at -5.
In contention after the opening day of the event, Kansas trails Louisville (-6) by just four shots and are the only two teams under par for the event. The Jayhawks shot a 283 (-1) as a team in the first round and followed that up with a 283 (-1) in the second round, which was played Monday afternoon.
The Jayhawks are in second place at -2 amongst the 18-team field.
"We played solid all day," said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. "We got off to a slow start but just kept grinding. Will and Gunnar were solid all day, but everyone contributed today and it was a team effort. Tuesday is big for us. We need to play solid golf and see what happens."
Kansas was led by King and Broin for day one, as both Jayhawks shot a pair of under-par rounds on Monday. King and Broin share a tie for third place, both at -5 for the event and in contention for medalist honors. Louisville's Sebastian Moss leads the 96-player field at -8.
ROUND ONE
King, who started on the sixth hole Monday morning, parred his first four holes and found a birdie on his fifth hole of the day. King birdied two more holes on the back nine, leading to a score of 33 on that side. King birdied the par five fourth hole and played consistently on his way in to shoot an opening round of 68.

Once Broin turned to the back nine, he would birdie four of his next six holes. Broin collected one more birdie on his final hole of the first round to card a three-under round of 68.
Sophomore Max Jelinek played steady golf throughout his opening round, totaling 14 pars on his first 18. Jelinek found birdies on the first and 18th hole to record an even-par round of 71 to start his tournament.
