CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Kansas men's golf team used four under-par rounds between
Gunnar Broin and
Will King to take third place at +3 in the Bearcat Invitational at Coldstream Country Club. King finished third individually at -5, while Broin followed one spot behind and in fourth at -4.
Â
"We had a chance today and just didn't execute some shots coming down the stretch," said Kansas head coach
Jamie Bermel. "Anytime we play a team on their home course, there is no margin for error and we couldn't close out Cincinnati, nor could we catch Louisville."
Â
King rode a one-under back nine to shoot an even-par 71 to conclude his tournament at five under and in solo third place. King finished the tournament with rounds of 68-69-71, good for a total of 208, his lowest 54-hole score since he won the Gopher Invitational last season. The third-place finish marks King's third top five finish of his Jayhawk career, and the first of his junior year.Â
Â
Broin played his fair share of steady golf in Tuesday's final round, carding four birdies and 10 pars to post a final round of 72 (+1). Broin finished the tournament alone in fourth place with a score of -4 after rounds of 68-69-72.Â
Â
Despite carding 11 pars and two birdies in the final round,
Max Jelinek could not replicate his success from Monday and carded a final round of 75 (+4), which left him at four over for the tournament. Jelinek finished in a tie for 47th, with a tournament score of +7.Â
Â
Holtzman bounced back in a big way for the Jayhawks, using an eagle on the par-four sixth hole to start three under through his first three holes. Holtzman continued to play steady golf and finished with an even par round of 71. Holtzman ended the Bearcat Invitational in a tie for 47th place, along with Jelinek at +7.
Â
Honner carded a final round of 76 (+5) to end the tournament at +12 and T78. Â
Â
"I'm really proud of
Will King," said Bermel. "He had a chance to win late and did it quite get it done, but he played well. Gunnar was really steady as well and
Noah Holtzman had a good day today. We need to tighten some things up and get ready for a great event at Northwestern in less than two weeks."
