
Hirst Tied for Second; Kansas in Third After Opening Round of Golfweek Red Sky Classic

WOLCOTT, Colo. - The Kansas women's golf team opened the Golfweek Red Sky Classic at Red Sky Ranch Golf Club on Monday with a 288 (E) in the first round. The Jayhawks, who sit in third place, were led by a four-under 68 from senior Lily Hirst, who is tied for second.
"It was a solid start for the Jayhawks today," said head coach Lindsay Kuhle. "We got off to another hot start on the front nine and had some great birdie opportunities all day."Â
Sacramento State leads the 16-team field at -7, while Boise State (-4), Kansas (E), Little Rock (+1) and UC Irvine (+1) round out the top five.Â
Hirst led the way for the Jayhawks today with a score of 68 (-4) to put her tied for second heading into the second round. Hirst was able to card an impressive six birdies today, with three of them coming in the last four holes. The round of 68 marks the ninth career round in the 60's for Hirst and her first under-par round of the season.
Junior Amy DeKock was under par as well on Monday, posting a 71 (-1) in the opening round. DeKock put together a bogey-free front nine, while also carding two birdies on the back nine. DeKock sits tied for 14th place.Â
"I'm really proud of Lily and how she competed today with a 68," said Kuhle. "Amy was very solid and got off to a quick start, ended up with a 71 and a birdie to finish."
Senior Johanna Ebner finished the opening round with a 73 (+1)Â and sits tied for 28th. Ebner was able to card five birdies on her round.
Senior Jordan Rothman shot a four-over 76 on Monday, which included four birdies on her scorecard. Rothman is T55 after the opening round.
Senior Lauren Clark is T73 after opening the event with a 79 (+7).
Sophomore Lyla Louderbaugh and junior Ruth Toennessen competed for Kansas as individuals on Monday. Louderbaugh notched a 74 (+2) and is T34 after carding five birdies. Toennessen shot a 77 (+5) and is T64.
"Tomorrow will be a good test to see if we can get five players to be close to each other in scoring," Kuhle added. "When we do this, we tend to go low as a team. We were close to being great today but just need to finish the round stronger these next two days so we can be in contention come the final round."
