WOLCOTT, Colo. - The Kansas women's golf team posted an 11-under 277 for Tuesday's second round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic and lead the 16-team field by five strokes heading into the final round.
"I'm really proud of how Johanna, Jordan and Lily came back today," said KU head coach Lindsay Kuhle. "They played with great composure and confidence as experienced senior leaders, and I couldn't be prouder."
Senior Jordan Rothman led the Jayhawks in the second round with a five-under 67, tying for the fifth-lowest round in program history. Rothman climbed 41 spots on the leaderboard, carded six birdies and an eagle on the 18th hole to cap her impressive second round. Rothman, who opened the event with a round of 76 on Monday, sits T14 at -1 for the tournament.
The Jayhawks, who shot an even-par 288 on Monday, responded with an 11-under 277 on Tuesday to climb two spots on the leaderboard and into first place with 18 holes to play. Kansas holds a five-stroke lead over Sacramento State (-6), Pepperdine (-4), Denver (-2) and Boise State (-1), rounding out the top five of the leaderboard.
Kansas' team score of 277 on Tuesday ties for the fourth-lowest team score in program history. In 2023-24, the Jayhawks shot a 277 in the opening round of the Wisconsin Westbrook Invitational and won the event.
"We gave ourselves many birdie opportunities and controlled our distance, direction and ball flight very well today," said Kuhle. "We know that you need to play aggressive in some conservative places out here to give yourselves the best chances for birdie and par opportunities today and with more difficult pins today, we did just that."
Senior Johanna Ebner also turned in a low scorecard, firing off a four-under round of 68 to climb 19 spots in the standings. Ebner's scorecard stayed relatively clean throughout Tuesday's second round, carding six birdies and just two bogeys for her first round in the 60's this season. Ebner sits T9 at -3 after the opening 36 holes.
Senior Lily Hirst sits inside of the top five and alone in fifth place at -6 after a two-under 70 on Tuesday. Hirst began her round with two bogeys in her first five holes, then went bogey-free while carding four birdies to notch her second round under par for the tournament.
After opening the round with a 71 (-1), junior Amy DeKock answered with an even-par 72, which included five birdies to keep her inside of the top 20 and T14 at -1.
Senior Lauren Clark shot a 77, notching three birdies on the scorecard. Clark is T70 at +12.
Sophomore Lyla Louderbaugh, who is competing as an individual for Kansas, shot a one-under 71 and sits T19 at +1. Louderbaugh carded three birdies on the day, which included an eagle on the 511-yard par-five fifth hole.
Also competing as an individual, junior Ruth Toennessen shot a one-over 73 that included three birdies. Toennessen sits T48 at +6.
"This team had courage, patience and played aggressively these two rounds," Kuhle said. "We're excited for the opportunity to bring home a win tomorrow."
