LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Kansas men's golf team sits in seventh place at +12 after the opening day of the Windon Memorial Classic at Conway Farms Golf Club.
Sunday's opening day was schedule for 36 holes. The second round of the event was suspended due to darkness, as players were called off the course at 6:45 p.m. CT.
After the first day at Conway Farms Golf Club, Kansas has been led by sophomore
Max Jelinek, who sits at even par after 32 holes of play. Graduate student
Gunnar Broin and
Luke Honner both sit tied for 32nd place at +4, junior
Will King is T57 at +9 and sophomore
Noah Holtzman is T80 at +14.
"Tough golf course with tough conditions today," said KU head coach
Jamie Bermel. "We battled all day long. I thought Max played well all day. Luke seemed to be hanging in there as well and Gunnar played steady. We need to finish a couple holes in the morning and then need to have a good third round."
Arizona leads the 16-team field at -6, followed by tournament host Northwestern (-5), Marquette (+1), USF (+4) and Pepperdine (+5) to round out the top five.
ROUND ONE
Jelinek played steady golf all day, finding birdies on two of the three par fives on the golf course. Jelinek would also add birdies on holes 3 and 12 and after adding eleven more pars, Jelinek found himself at even par after his first 18 holes.
Broin and Honner also played solid in the opening round, as both Jayhawks fired a two-over-par score of 73. Broin found more birdies in his first 18, as he carded two birdies on each nine on his way to shooting two over. Honner found more pars however as the South Dakota State transfer added 13 pars as he tied his career low round as a Jayhawk in the opening round Sunday morning.
Holtzman rebounded off of a stretch in which he bogeyed three holes in-a-row, able to make a birdie on the par-three 17th. He would add another birdie on the eighth hole as he fired an opening round of 75.
King struggled to find a groove in the opening round but did find 10 pars in his first 18, on his way to shooting an 80.
ROUND TWO
Jelinek continued his hot start from the first round, shooting an identical score of even par before play was suspended. Jelinek got his day started with an eagle on his first hole of the second round, and found two more birdies to close out the opening day.
Honner and Broin both stayed at the same pace into round two on Sunday, playing steady golf and sitting at four over par for the tournament before play was suspended.
Holtzman and King struggled to find a groove once again in the second round, as Holtzman found five pars to remain at +14 for the tournament. King got it going shortly before play was suspended, tallying four birdies in-a-row to move his score to nine over for the tournament and even for the second round.
