LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Kansas Men's Golf used a season-low team score of 279 (-5) in the final round of the Windon Memorial Classic at Conway Farms Golf Club on Monday, finishing in fourth place at +6.
Gunnar Broin and Will King each fired off rounds of 66 (-5) in the final round to jolt Kansas up two spots and inside of the top five in a loaded 16-team field. Broin finished in a tie for eighth place at -2 for his first top-10 finish of the season and seventh as a Jayhawk.
Along with a pair of 66's from KU veterans Broin and King, Noah Holtzman chipped in his first under-par round of the season, firing a one-under score of 70. Luke Honner and Max Jelinek each shot rounds of 77 (+6) in the final round of play.
Arizona won the event at -10. Kansas also finished behind Marquette, and host school Northwestern.
"We played well today as a team," said KU head coach Jamie Bermel. "Gunnar and Will were on fire today. 5-under on that golf course with today's pin locations is impressive. I'm very proud of Noah, he responded with a great round today after struggling Sunday. It was a total team effort. Really solid finish in a good field on a great golf course."
Broin continues to play consistent golf for the Jayhawks as he started his final round with birdies on four of his first five holes. Broin continued his early momentum by notching a birdie on holes 3 and 9 to card a front nine 34. Broin carded a birdie on the par-three 11th hole, and an additional birdie on the par-five 14th for a total of seven birdies on the day. The 66 ties for Broin's second-lowest round as a Jayhawk. Broin finished the tournament in a tie for eighth place at -2.
After struggling to find a groove in the first 36 holes of the tournament, King hit the ground running in the final round of play. King played his first six holes at two-under par, and then would keep the momentum rolling, finding a birdie on the par-three second hole, and then finding back-to-back birdies on holes 7 and 8 to card a 33 on the front nine. King would birdie the par-four 10th and the par-five 14th to card a final round of 66, good for his best round of the season. King finished the Windon Memorial T20 at +3.
Jelinek carded two birdies on the day to shoot a six-over 77 in the final round. Jelinek finished T41 at +8 for the event.
Honner also shot a 77 in the final round, finishing +9 and in a tie for 46th.
Holtzman got to work in the final round, finding three birdies on the front nine to shoot a 32 on the that side. Holtzman played steady from there, using a back-nine 38 to shoot a one-under 70, good for a T59 finish at +13.
