BOSTON, Mass. – The Kansas Women's Rowing team will travel northeast to compete in the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston for the fourth consecutive year, opening their Fall racing schedule at one of the sport's most prestigious events.
The Head of the Charles is among the largest regattas in the world, featuring more than 12,000 athletes and thousands of spectators lining the banks of the Charles River throughout the two days of competition.
We are excited to kick off the season on such a big stage, said newly appointed head coach Andrew Derrick. Our athletes trained hard through the summer to earn this opportunity, as the Charles is always an athlete favorite. They also have the privilege and the responsibility to represent all the hard work our program has put in this Fall, and I think these 10 women will do a great job of that.
Joining Derrick on staff is assistant coach Julia Camillucci, who previously worked alongside him with the Gonzaga rowing program. Also on staff, assistant coaches, Madison Hovis returning for her 8th season and Lauren Fee returning for her 3rd season to coach the Jayhawks.
Kansas' appearance will mark its fifth all-time entry in the 60-year history of the regatta. Last season, the Jayhawks captured a first-place finish in the Women's Club Fours, as returning senior Kara Lyons and junior Gracie Shepherd helped power their crew to a time of 18:20.825.
This year, Kansas will have two boats on the Charles River. The Women's Club Fours crew includes Kyra Kavouridis, Martina Zbiralova, Gracie Shepherd, Gretchen Schmierer Knust and Anastasiia Draha, who will race Saturday, Oct. 18, at 12:50 p.m. CT. The Women's Championship Fours crew features Megan Engerman, Claire Van Mater, Kara Lyons, Lindsey True and Carmen Arkin, who will compete Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1:30 p.m. CT.
