SEA ISLAND, Ga. – Senior Gunnar Broin fired a bogey-free 64 in the final round to secure his first collegiate victory, earning medalist honors at the Johnnie-O at Sea Island and leading Kansas to a tie for fifth place.
"Great win for Gunnar. Really proud of him and how he handled himself this week," said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. "He made one bogey the entire 36 holes and that was a 3 putt bogey on the second hole of the tournament. He shot bogey-free 6-under today and looked very comfortable playing. He has been close a couple times in his three years at KU, but hasn't ever won. The first win is always the hardest to get, but I expect him to gain more and more confidence in himself."
Teams played 24 holes on Tuesday, completing the final six holes of the first round before competing in an additional 18-hole round to conclude the 36-hole tournament. Kansas finished in a tie for fifth place at +4 after shooting 3-under as a team in the final round, marking the Jayhawks' sixth top-five finish of the season.
Kansas was led by Broin, who closed out his first round at two under, carding an opening-round 68. He followed up with a stellar final round, recording six birdies and 12 pars to fire a six-under 64, securing the tournament title with a clutch par putt on the 18th hole. This victory marks Broin's first as a Jayhawk.
After overcoming an injury that sidelined him earlier in the spring season, Will King made a strong return in his first tournament of the spring. He closed on a high note, recording nine pars and four birdies to shoot an even-par 70 in the final round. King finished the tournament in a tie for 38th place at +4.
"Good to see Will King in the lineup this week and I think he got more and more comfortable as he played more holes," Bermel said.
Luke Honner and Max Jelinek each shot a two-over 72 in the final round, finishing the tournament at five over par and tying for 45th place overall.
Noah Holtzman closed out his tournament with a one-over 71, recording four birdies in the final round to finish in a tie for 57th place.
Felix Bouchard wrapped up his third tournament as an individual for Kansas, placing 61st at nine over par.
