MARICOPA, Ariz. – Kansas Men's Golf completed the first day of the Cowboy Classic Monday evening at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course, currently in ninth place at -6.
Â
Kansas completed the first 18 holes Monday morning, and then the second round of play was suspended Monday night due to darkness. The Jayhawks played the first 15 holes of round two.Â
Â
"
Ty Lasley was a late sub and really played solid the first round," said Kansas Head Coach
Jamie Bermel. "We made a couple of bad decisions and bad swings and paid dearly. We have 2-3 holes left in second round and then need to play well the third round."
Â
Kansas was led by junior
Will King, who is tied for 17th with a score of three under par for the tournament. Senior
Gunnar Broin and freshman
Ty Lasley finished the day where they started, at even par. Sophomores
Max Jelinek and
Noah Holtzman are just behind, with Jelinek at one over par and Holtzman at two over.
King was in control throughout the day. In the first round, he got off to a strong start, birdieing three of his first four holes and finishing the front nine with a 33 (-3). He carried that momentum into the clubhouse, shooting a one-under-par 71 for round one. In the second round, King kept his momentum going, shooting a 34 on the front nine. With three holes left to play in the second round, King sits at three under par for the tournament.
Broin and Lasley both ended the day at even par for Kansas. Broin relied on 12 pars in his opening round to card an even-par 72. On his second trip around the course, Broin continued his steady play, parring eight holes in a row to maintain an even-par score with three holes remaining in his second round.
Lasley was an under-par scorer in the first round, totaling 16 pars and two birdies to fire off an opening round 70, which was good for two-under-par. Lasley would find more pars in his second round, but continued to play solid, and ended the day at even par.Â
Â
Holtzman and Jelinek also played steady for Kansas through the first 33 holes, as Jelinek caught fire near the end of the day, birding four of his last six holes before play was called due to darkness. Jelinek is one over par for the tournament and in a tie for 58th place.
Â
Holtzman had parred 13 of his last 15 before play got suspended Monday evening, following up his even par 72 in the opening round. Holtzman is at two over par for the tournament, which puts him in 65th place.Â
