SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Kansas men's golf team continues its spring season at the Desert Mountain Collegiate Tournament, held on the Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, Arizona, from March 8-9.
The event will feature 17 teams in the field playing 54 holes over the two-day tournament. Day one will consist of 36 holes of stroke play, followed by the final 18 on day two.
"We had a lot of good practice the last 10 days," said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. "We have a tournament under our belt and the guys seem to be in a good spot. Desert Mountain is a great test of golf. Greens have a lot of slope and typically get some wind out here in the afternoon."
Coach Bermel will stick with the same lineup from the previous tournament at PGA West, where Kansas posted a one-under-par finish in a highly competitive 24-team field. Competing in the Jayhawks' second event of the spring will be senior Gunnar Broin, juniors Max Jelinek and Luke Honner, sophomore Noah Holtzman, and freshman Ty Lasley. Freshman Felix Bouchard will also make his second appearance as an individual at Desert Mountain.
Broin looks to bounce back after a three-over finish at The Prestige in the first event of the spring. Broin continues to anchor the Jayhawk lineup, as he has started in every event of the season. Broin has an 18-hole scoring average of 70.78, which is the team low.
Jelinek is another Jayhawk who has gotten the starting nod in all events this season, and he was the second-lowest Jayhawk in the spring opener. Jelinek played steady golf at The Prestige, ending the tournament at one over par. Jelinek carries an 18-hole scoring average of 73.22 this season.
Honner is coming off his best start as a Jayhawk in the first event of the spring at The Prestige. Honner's score was at or below par for all three rounds of the tournament, leading to a 209, his best 54-hole score as a Jayhawk. Honner ended the first tournament of the spring in a tie for 12th, and looks to carry the momentum into Desert Mountain.
Holtzman is set for another start with Kansas, following The Prestige where he shot the lowest round of the spring for any Jayhawk golfer, firing a 68 in the opening round at PGA West. Holtzman also ended the fall season on a high note, as he carded a -9 tournament score at the Ka'anapali Classic in Hawaii. Holtzman is second on the team in rounds in the 60s with four and looks to build on that this week.
Lasley is coming off of his first appearance as a Jayhawk at The Prestige where he used a final round 72 to help Kansas into a seventh-place finish. Lasley finished his first tournament with Kansas shooting a 222.
Bouchard is getting his first start this spring after making an appearance in the fall as an individual at the Ka'anapali Classic in Hawaii. Bouchard used a final round 68 to card a 215 in his first collegiate tournament, good for two over par. Bouchard will play as an individual in the Desert Mountain Collegiate, just as he did in Hawaii.Kansas will be grouped up with Minnesota, Lamar and UTEP for Saturday's opening two rounds with tee times at 8:30 a.m. CT in a shotgun start format. Sunday's final round will also begin at 8:30 a.m. CT in a shotgun start.
