MARICOPA, Ariz. – The Kansas men's golf team fired a final-round 277 (-11) to climb three spots and secure a fifth-place finish out of 23 teams at the Cowboy Classic, finishing at 18-under (846) for the event. The Jayhawks have now recorded a top-five finish in seven tournaments this season.
Long Beach State claimed the Cowboy Classic title with a team score of 827 (-37). Iowa State (-23), San Diego (-21), and Wichita State (-21) joined Kansas (-18) to round out the top five at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course.
Kansas was led by junior Will King, who finished at 207 (-9) to secure third place at Southern Dunes. It marked his fourth career top-five finish and his second of the season.
"We played well today in fairly windy conditions. Really proud of all of the guys and how they competed," Kansas Head Coach Jamie Bermel said. "Ty (Lasley) was a Sunday call-up because Luke (Honner) was sick and he answered the bell. It was also good to have Will King back and playing well. Max (Jelinek) had a solid round today and overall it was a great team effort."
King set the tone early, birdieing two of his final three holes to close out the second round before carrying that momentum into Tuesday's final round. King recorded seven birdies, including a stretch of four straight, en route to a 68 (-4), securing a third-place finish at Southern Dunes. King finished second in the field in Par 4 scoring with an average of 3.83, trailing only Long Beach State's Forster (3.67). He also ranked second in total birdies for the week, carding 18.
Freshman Ty Lasley and sophomore Max Jelinek both finished at two under par, tying for 26th place. Lasley's final round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-four 14th hole, propelling him to a two-under 70 and a 54-hole total of 214. Jelinek also eagled in Tuesday's final round and posted four birdies, firing a team-best 67 to finish at 214 (-2). Jelinek's round of 67 jolted him up 42 spots on the individual leaderboard.
Senior Gunnar Broin continued his steady play, carding an even-par 72 in the final round to finish at one under (215) for the tournament.
Sophomore Noah Holtzman shot a final-round 74 to close out the event at six over par, tying for 73rd place.
