IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Kansas men's golf team holds an eight-shot lead at 26-under after two rounds of the Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City. Gunnar Broin leads the individual field at 10-under, following back-to-back rounds of 67.
"We had a good day today. Guys played well and really hung in there all day," said KU head coach Jamie Bermel. "Gunnar had a great day and Will King played really steady as well. Max (Jelinek) and Luke (Honner) were solid, and Ty (Lasley) counted the second round."
Kansas' opening-round 15-under ties its lowest score of the season, matching the Jayhawks' first-round total at the Ka'anapali Classic in Hawaii this fall.
Broin got off to a hot start in round one, following a par on his opening hole with four straight birdies and another on the front nine to post a 5-under 32. He carried that momentum through the rest of the round, finishing with a 67 (-5). In the second round, Broin continued his stellar play, carding two eagles on his way to another 67. He leads the 74-player field in par-3 scoring average (2.88) and is the tournament leader in eagles with two.
Junior Will King also had a strong showing, going 3-under through his first seven holes. He tallied three more birdies on the back nine to post a first-round 69 (-3), then followed it up with six birdies and 11 pars for a second-round 67. King sits in a tie for third place at 8-under. King leads the field in birdies made with 12 and is second in par-4 scoring at 3.85.
Sophomore Max Jelinek started strong with birdies on his first two holes and added two more to shoot a 34 on the front nine of round one. He eagled the par-5 11th and birdied the 15th to finish with a 68 (-4). Jelinek played steady in round two, carding 12 pars and a round of 71 (E), placing him in solo seventh at 5-under.
Junior Luke Honner posted a consistent opening nine, then caught fire on the back with birdies on holes 10 and 11, finishing with a 3-under 69. He added three more birdies in round two, but a few miscues led to a 75 (+3). Honner is tied for 22nd at even par.
Freshman Ty Lasley turned in a solid performance, shooting a 74 in round one and an even-par 72 in round two. He sits in a tie for 32nd at 2-over.
Sophomore Noah Holtzman, competing as an individual, birdied three of his first nine holes and added an eagle on the 11th to shoot a 2-under 70 in the opening round. He followed that with a steady even-par 72 in round two and is tied for 14th at 2-under.
