BREMERTON, Wash. – The Kansas men's golf team posted an opening round score of 297 (+9) at Gold Mountain Golf Club on Monday and sit in ninth place in the 14-team NCAA Bremerton Regional.Â
Florida leads the pack at -9, followed by Arizona State (-2), Colorado (+1), Kansas State (+2) and USF (+2) rounding out the top five of the standings. With 36 holes left to play, the top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championship in La Costa, California, May 23-28. Kansas is seven shots back of fifth place. The low individual on a non-advancing team will also advance to the championship.Â
"We struggled today early," said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. "Guys seem very tight and nervous playing the first few holes. We finally settled down on the back and played better. We need to play well the next two days."Â
Kansas was led by senior Gunnar Broin, who is making his third NCAA Regional appearance as a Jayhawk. Broin was the lone Jayhawk to finish under par in the opening round, carding a 1-under 71. After a bogey on the opening hole, he played steady golf the rest of the way, going 2-under over the final 17 holes.Â
"I thought Gunnar looked good out there," Bermel added. "Made only two bad swings all day, but other than that looked solid. The round on Tuesday is huge. We need to get off to a good start and make some birdies."Â
Junior Luke Honner turned in a solid round, rebounding from a 2-over 38 on the front nine. He made just one bogey on the 10th hole before closing with seven straight pars and a birdie on 18 to post a 2-over 74.Â
Junior Will King added a 3-over 75, highlighted by two birdies in his round.Â
Sophomore Max Jelinek used a pair of birdies on the back nine to finish with a 5-over 77 in his opening round.Â
Freshman Ty Lasley carded a 6-over 78, highlighted by three birdies, including a stretch of back-to-back birdies on holes 14 and 15.Â
