CARLSBAD, Calif. – The Kansas women's golf team opened the NCAA Championship on Friday at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa Champions Course in Carlsbad, California, posting a team score of 297 (+9).Â
Making their first NCAA Championship appearance since 2014, the Jayhawks were led by senior Lauren Clark, who carded an even-par 72. Clark's round included two birdies and an eagle on the 513-yard, par-five sixth hole.Â
"We had a really great round going," said Kansas head coach Lindsay Kuhle. "Then the wind picked up a bit, and I think it threw us off our rhythm. We didn't finish strong, and it was definitely a disappointing end, especially knowing how well we were playing all day. But I think this will make us hungry going into tomorrow and help us come in with a strong mindset."
Freshman Ebba Nordstedt, the first Jayhawk to tee off Friday morning, recorded two birdies in her first three holes and finished with a 73 (+1).Â
Junior Amy DeKock was 2-under and bogey-free through 16 holes before back-to-back double bogeys on the final two holes led to a 75 (+3).Â
Senior Johanna Ebner shot a 77 (+5), highlighted by a birdie on the 531-yard, par-five second hole, while sophomore Lyla Louderbaugh finished with a 78 (+6).Â
"We're definitely not out of it," Kuhle added. "We can get it back and play with confidence tomorrow. If you can have five players playing well, that can make a great team score. We'll look for that the next two days as we compete for a national championship."
