WILMINGTON, Del. – The Kansas women's rowing team had a program-record 15 athletes receive scholar-athlete honors for the 2024-25 academic year, announced by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) on Tuesday.Â
"This record number of CRCAÂ Scholar-Athletes is a direct reflection of the discipline, balance and grit our women bring to both the classroom and the water," said Kansas assistant coach
Madison Hovis. "They continue to set the standard of what it means to be a complete student-athlete at Kansas and we couldn't be more proud of their commitment to excellence."Â
Leading the Kansas selections were seven seniors of
Ava Black,
Amber Cayci,
Tammy Keller,
Karly Larson,
Sarah Sutton,
Laura Teska and
Alessandra Vedder. Following in the junior class is
Rory Brennan,
Anastasiia Draha,
Kara Lyons,
Abigail Steffen,
Lindsey True, while sophomores
Sofia D'Ascenzo,
Sophie Pense and
Gracie Shepherd also posted their names on the list.Â
For Black, Lyons, Sutton and Teska, this is the third time that they have been named CRCA Scholar-Athletes in their careers, and it is the second straight accolade for Brennan, Draha, Keller, Larson and Vedder.
Sutton and True are two of 60 student-athletes to achieve a perfect 4.00 grade point average throughout their undergraduate career. Also finishing their KU academic career with an impressive GPA of 3.99 is Teska and Vedder. In total, over 1,000 student-athletes across the Division I, II, III and lightweight divisions were honored.
To be eligible for nomination, rowers had to meet all institutional and conference eligibility rules, be in at least their second year of eligibility and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher. Athletically, they had to row in at least 75 percent of the team's spring races in an NCAA eligible boat, or compete in an NCAA boat at the conference championship.
Kansas had the highest number of CRCA Scholar-Athletes in the Big 12 with its 15 honorees. This marks the third-straight year that Kansas has had 10 or more rowers earn the award as the team has now totaled 110 athletes with the recognition throughout program history.
