LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 14 Kansas soccer fell to No. 10 TCU in a hard fought 3-2 match at Rock Chalk Park on Sunday afternoon.
Lexi Watts and
Saige Wimes both scored goals despite the defeat.
Â
The Jayhawks moved to 7-2-2 and 1-2-0 in Big 12 play this season, while TCU improved to 9-1-0 and 3-0-0 in conference action this season.
Â
"I'm proud of how our team responded from Thursday night," head coach
Nate Lie said. "I think it tested how we respond to adversity for the first time and, obviously, then proud that we scored five minutes into the match."
Â
Lie continued, "Very proud of how we came out in the first half, very disappointed in how we came out of halftime. That first 20 minutes we just got outplayed, and I think it drained our energy and we had a hard time investing in the things that make us successful."
Â
Kansas applied pressure on the TCU defense at the start of the match. Watts took an errant pass by a Horned Frog defender in the 18-yard box and hit a strike with her left foot and buried it behind the goalkeeper to take an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.
Â
TCU was granted a penalty kick in the 24th minute, when Kansas had a handball violation in the box. Seven Castain took the penalty kick and scored to tie the match at 1-1.
Â
In the 63rd minute, after a saved shot by Sophie Dawe, Castain took the rebound and found the back of the net to put the Horned Frogs up 2-1.Â
Â
Castain once again got control of a ball off of a rebound on a saved shot in the 65th minute and finished the opportunity to put the Horned Frogs ahead 3-1.Â
Â
Wimes forced a turnover in TCU territory in the 83rd minute, as she made a move to her left to get around the TCU goalkeeper and capitalized on an empty net to get the Jayhawks within one, making the score 3-2.
Â
The teams then traded possession over the last seven minutes of the match, but Kansas could not find an equalizer and fell 3-2.
