LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas catcher
Ella Boyer has been named National Freshman of the Week by both D1 Softball and Softball America, announced Tuesday. This marks Boyer's first national recognition of the season and her fourth overall Freshman of the Week award, including two earlier honors from the Big 12 Conference. Boyer becomes the first Jayhawk to receive national recognition since 2024.
"We are all so excited for Ella," head coach
Jennifer McFalls said. "Her work ethic is amazing, her commitment to excellence is exceptional, and she's a tremendous team player. Ella has been a difference-maker for Kansas Softball, and she continues to elevate everyone around her. We are so proud of her."
Boyer powered the Jayhawks offensively in their series against No. 20 Arizona State, hitting .750 (6-for-8) with six runs, three home runs, and six RBI across three games. The Spring, Texas native opened the series, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in KU's 11-7 win before adding another multi-hit performance with a home run in the second game. Boyer delivered the go-ahead home run in the series finale, helping secure a Kansas 5-4 victory while reaching base in all four plate appearances, including three walks.
With her three home runs during the series, Boyer reached 17 on the season and setting the Kansas freshman single-season home run record. Her 17 homers rank tied for second on the Kansas single-season list with Morgyn Wynne (2021). Defensively, Boyer was perfect behind the plate, recording a 1.000 fielding percentage with seven putouts.
Boyer's standout play has earned her national recognition in multiple statistical categories. She ranks ninth nationally in home runs, 11th in home runs per game, 16th in RBIs, 33rd in slugging percentage, and 39th in total bases, placing her among the top freshmen and hitters across NCAA Division I.
This season, Boyer leads Kansas with a .377 batting average, .489 on-base percentage, 0.925 slugging percentage, 17 home runs, 52 RBI, and 40 hits, solidifying her role as the cornerstone of the Jayhawks' lineup. Her power and consistency have powered key KU victories, including the program's first-ranked series conference win since 2024.
Kansas will look to carry this momentum into its next Big 12 series against Baylor at Arrocha Ballpark, April 10-11.
