Get to Know Abigail ...
At what age did you start swimming and how did you get into the sport?
- I started swimming competitively on a club team when I was 7 years old. I got into the sport as most people do, through summer league meets when I was little.
What routines do you practice before a big race to help you focus and stay ready?
- Before a big meet or race I always like to tell myself to not think about the meet until I get there. One of my old coaches told me that you shouldn’t stress about the meet until your feet walk onto the pool deck because you can’t do anything about the meet until you’re physically there.
What is something that someone wouldn't know about you?
- I used to hate coffee before I got to college, and now I love it.
What sport would you play if you did not swim and why?
- I think soccer because my dad played in college and I used to play before I quit to focus on swim.
What advice would you give to young athletes who are just starting out in swimming?
- Stay committed. This sport is really hard physically and mentally, but the people you meet and the lessons you learn along the way make it so so worth it.
Who is a role model in your life that pushed you to be better in and out of the pool?
- My two main role models in my life are my mom and dad. They’ve spent so much of their time and money on me, and I’m so thankful.
Why did you choose the University of Kansas?
- I chose KU because I could tell it was a super special place on my visit. The people here are always so kind and welcoming, and the athletic programs here are awesome.
