Kansas Rowing freshman Melia Martin has been named the Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Year. The conference announced postseason rowing specialty awards on Wednesday afternoon.
Head coach Carrie Cook-Callen and the Kansas Rowing staff announced the team’s 2021-22 team awards on Monday at the team’s annual banquet, which was held in the Burge Union.
Kansas had a program-record 31 student-athletes named to the 2022 Academic All-Big 12 Rowing team, which was announced on Tuesday by the conference office. The Jayhawks 31 selections was the second-most of the seven programs who compete in the Big 12 for rowing.
With 27 points, Kansas placed fifth in the Big 12 Rowing Championships in Austin, Texas on Sunday, May 15. Kansas beat out Kansas State by five and West Virginia by 24 points to clinch fifth.
Victories in the first two races of the day propelled the Kansas Rowing team to a 15-7 victory over Kansas State on Saturday morning in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown. The race was held on the Kansas River at Burcham Park in Lawrence.
Kansas Rowing hosts the annual Sunflower Showdown against Kansas State on Saturday, April 30, at Wyandotte County Lake. The Jayhawks will then cap off the day with a dual against Drake.
Following a weekend off, Kansas Rowing will return to action this weekend in Raleigh, North Carolina, where the Jayhawks will compete in the Lake Wheeler Invite, a two-day regatta starting on Friday, April 23.
