Kansas Rowing Wraps up Competitive Racing at Sarasota 2K

SARASOTA, Fla. – Winning its respective final races was the 1 Varsity 4+ and 2 Varsity 8+ boats at Sarasota 2K on Saturday morning in the Jayhawks first spring action of the season.
The weekend started off strong in Friday preliminaries with the Jayhawk 2 Varsity 4+ and 3 Varsity 8+ boats both finishing second in their heat to advance to the A Final. The 1 Varsity 8+ and 2 Varsity 8+ boats made their way to the B final with third and fourth place finishes as the 1 Varsity 4+ squad moved into the C Finals with a fifth place finish.
All finals action featured a glimpse of Big 12 competition as Kansas faced conference opponents in every race.
The Jayhawks returned to water on Saturday morning, beginning with Kyra Kavouridis, Taylor Lindberg, Carmen Arkin, Izzy Smikahl and Kathryn Borthwick placing fourth in the A Finals in the 2 Varsity 4+ race. This crew had the second fastest finish out of the fellow five Big 12 schools in the event at 7:45.84, with only the winners of No. 25 UCF posting a better time.
The group of Olivia Schroeder, Emma Olney, Kaylie Hellner, Grace Morenz, Grace Bailey, Catherine Bachovchin, Morgan Tenpenny, McKaylee Day and Gretchen Schmierer Knust had an identical finish in the 3 Varsity 8+ race. The squad collected a fourth place of their own in the A Finals and beat out all Big 12 competition, except race winners UCF, with their time of 7:09.56.
Picking up the first Jayhawk win of the season was the 1 Varsity 4+ members of Rylee Crowell, Jacie Goff, Andi Dyer, Emerson Linthicum, Abigail Steffen. The crew raced a time of 7:53.70 in the C Finals, beating out Big 12 competition from West Virginia, Old Dominion and Tulsa en route to the victory.
In a tight battle from start to finish, it was the Kansas 2 Varsity 8+ boat that crossed the finish line first at 6:53.08 in the B final, edging out second finisher Tulsa by 0.27 of a second for the win. It was the group of Sarah Sutton, Ava Black, Anastasiia Draha, Tammy Keller, Emma Wistuba, Lindsey True, Sophie Pense, Aylin Schafer and Sofia D'Ascenzo secured the second Jayhawk victory of the day.
Rounding out the weekend was the 1 Varsity 8+ ending fifth in the B finals with a time of 6:45.09. Members of the boat included Audrey Owens, Karly Larson, Gracie Shepherd, Laura Teska, Kara Lyons, Katia Ustiuzhanina, Rory Brennan, Amber Cayci and Alessandra Vedder.
