LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas sophomore diver
Shiyun Lai, junior swimmer
Lydia Lafferty and head diving coach
Allen Feng each earned postseason honors from the Big 12 Conference, the league announced Wednesday.
Lai was named Big 12 Women's Diver of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Big 12 First Team, while Lafferty was selected to the All-Big 12 Second Team. Feng was honored as the Big 12 Women's Diving Coach of the Year.
First team honors are awarded to athletes who placed first through fourth at the Big 12 Championship, while second team recognition goes to those who finished fifth through eighth.
Lai becomes the first Kansas diver since the inception of the Big 12 (1996-97) to win conference diver of the year.
"Shiyun and Lydia's All-Big 12 selection capped off an outstanding season for both," said Kansas head coach
Clark Campbell. "We are looking forward to their leadership and contribution next year. We could not be prouder of Allen for his award and the success he is bringing to our diving program."
Lai, a First Team All-American in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events this season, became just the second Jayhawk ever to claim gold in multiple events at the conference championships. Lai qualified for the championship event for all three of her diving events, claiming gold in the one-meter and silver in the three-meter to go along with her fifth-place finish on the platform. Following the conference championships, Lai secured seventh place in the one-meter diving event, then followed that up with a sixth-place finish in the three-meter event at the NCAA Championships. Her performances marked the highest placement by a Jayhawk since 1996.
Lafferty had an impressive showing at the Big 12 Championships, earning an NCAA "B" cut in the 100-yard butterfly with a lifetime-best time of 53.24—the second-fastest mark in program history. Lafferty finished fifth overall in the championship final of the 100 fly, scoring 25 points for KU. She also qualified for the consolation final in the 100 backstroke, placing 11th overall with a time of 53.85.
In his fourth season leading the Kansas diving program, Feng has guided Lai and the Jayhawks to back-to-back appearances at the NCAA Championships, most recently earning a 25th-place team finish—the program's best since 1996. Under Feng's leadership, Lai earned eight Big 12 weekly awards and captured first place in the one-meter event at the Big 12 Championships. He also coached her to two podium finishes at the NCAA Championships, where she was named a First Team All-American in both the one-meter and three-meter events.
