LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas senior golfer
Will King captured the 115th Kansas Amateur Championship on Sunday, July 20, as he emerged victorious in the 36-hole final at Firekeeper Golf Course in Mayetta. King claims the championship one year after he finished as the runner-up at the event in 2024 at Topeka Country Club.
Â
King becomes the 20th Jayhawk to win the event, while claiming the 26th all-time win from a Kansas men's golf alumni. King is the first KU golfer to claim the Kansas Amateur Championship since Andy Spencer in 2019, and he joins Sion Audrain (2018), Chase Hanna (2013) and PGA Tour professional Gary Woodland (2005 & 2007) in winning the event in the past 20 years.
Â
"This is a very nice win for Will," Kansas coach Jamie Bermel said. "He got beat in the final last year and I know he wanted to play well this year. Not only is it a nice win but it also qualifies him for the US Amateur, which is the best amateur event in the world. We are very proud of Will for adding his name to the list of many former Jayhawks to be the Kansas Amateur Champion."
Â
King won the event with a 1-up victory over Nathan Hughes of Prairie Village in the 36-hole final day of the tournament. He was able to string together an impressive week in central Kansas, before overcoming a three-hour rain delay in the final round to secure the win with a 1-up victory.
Â
From Olathe, King is entering his senior season at the University of Kansas and is coming off an impressive junior campaign. He recorded a scoring average of 71.55 during his junior season, including eight rounds in the 60s, and he led the team in rounds counted with 93.1% (27-of-29). King has two career individual titles to his credit, including the Hawkeye Invitational in April, and he qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2023 as a freshman after tying for fourth at regionals.
