FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Sophomore
Shiyun Lai captured gold in the 1M diving championship as the Kansas women's swimming and diving team sits in eighth place after day two of the Big 12 Championships.
"I'm very happy with Shiyun's 1M championship," said Kansas head coach
Clark Campbell. "Our divers did very well today. We'll have more swim finalists tomorrow."
Wednesday's competition began with morning prelims, where Lai led the way for Kansas by winning the 1M diving prelims and securing a spot in the championship final. Junior diver
Lize van Leeuwen advanced to the consolation final in the 1M event, while freshman
Gabi Dyer (500 free) and junior
Hailey Farrell (200 IM) qualified for the C-final of their respective events.
After winning gold in the 3M diving event at the 2024 Big 12 Championships, Lai secured the 1M diving title at this year's Big 12 Championships with a score of 325.10. She joins former Jayhawk Kate Steward as one of only two Kansas athletes to earn multiple gold medals at the Big 12 Championships. Steward claimed three titles combined in 2019 and 2020.
Van Leeuwen secured a ninth-place finish in the 1M diving event with a score of 280.15, winning the consolation final in the process.
Dyer placed 21st overall in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:56.73, while Farrell also finished 21st in the 200 IM, clocking in at 2:02.56.
