LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas softball team is set to host Missouri State for a standalone midweek contest on Tuesday, April 15, at Arrocha Ballpark. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CT.Â
"I think the Jayhawks will be ready to get back on the field tomorrow against Missouri State after a tough conference weekend," said head coach Jennifer McFalls. "We needed to hit the reset button today so we can refocus and prepare for the week ahead."
Kansas (17-20, 4-11 Big 12) enters the matchup after dropping three games to No. 13 Arizona. The Wildcats took game one of the series in a defensive battle, where the Jayhawks held Arizona to their lowest scoring game of the series in a 2-0 loss. Games two and three saw Arizona's offense take control, with Kansas falling 15-3 and 11-1, respectively. The Jayhawks will look to bounce back and use the series as motivation heading into their second meeting of the season against Missouri State.
In their first matchup earlier this season at the Paradise Classic in Boca Raton, Fla., Kansas was able to earn its first win of the year with an 8-0 shutout over Missouri State. Freshman pitcher Kaelee Washington threw four scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out two. Junior Lizzy Ludwig closed out the fifth inning to secure the combined shutout. Junior Hailey Cripe led the Jayhawks at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including a key two-RBI single in Kansas's five-run fourth inning.
At the plate, Kansas continues to be led by junior Presley Limbaugh, who paces the team in batting average (.373), hits (44), doubles (10), and triples (2). Limbaugh's ten doubles earns her a place in the top ten of the most doubles hit across the Big 12.Â
Cripe remains a consistent offensive threat, leading the team in RBIs (25) and home runs (6). Senior Olivia Bruno also has recorded six home runs, after launching one to deep left field in the third game of the Arizona series. Bruno and Cripe lead the team in home runs this season.
In the circle, Kansas has leaned on its versatile pitching staff. Bruno leads the team with a 2.63 ERA, along with 36 strikeouts and four complete games. Senior Katie Brooks has been a reliable starter, leading in innings pitched (56.0) and starts (10).
