
Jayhawks Set to Begin Spring Season at Sarasota 2K

SARASOTA, Fla. – Kansas Rowing will open its Spring season with the Sarasota 2k at Nathan Benderson Park, one of the top rowing facilities in the nation, marking the Jayhawk's fifth consecutive appearance in the regatta. Action starts at 2 p.m. CT on Friday, Mar. 27 and 8 a.m. CT on Saturday, Mar. 28.
We are excited to open the season, head rowing coach Andrew Derrick said, entering his first Spring season with the Jayhawks The field is strong this year with some very good teams attending and we look forward to lining up and seeing how we stack up. As far as our squad goes, we have made some great progress this year, but ultimately eager for the opportunity demonstrate it on the racecourse.
Five boats will hit the water in Florida over the weekend with the I Eight boat consisting of For Stars Network Watchlist candidates freshman Claire Van Mater and junior Tya Drennen, as well as juniors Gracie Shepherd, Sophie Pense, Kathryn Borthwick, Gretchen Schmierer Knust, Ruby Moritz-Cammack with seniors Lindsey True and Kara Lyons.
The II Eight Line team includes sophomores Kyra Kavouridis, Martina Zbiralova, Grace Bailey, Kaylie Hellner with freshmen Katariina Peipman, Kenzington Rector, Izzy Rosatto, as well as junior Eva Robinson and senior Aylin Schafer.
Freshman Megan Engerman, juniors Alex Robinson and Sofia D'Ascenzo, with seniors Anastasiia Draha and Rory Brennan make up the I Four boat.
The II Four boat team is freshman Hollis Andreen, sophomores Emerson Lithicum and Isabel Smikahl, as well as junior Kayley Chism and senior Abigail Steffen.
The final III Eight boat team will have freshmen Samantha Ronen, Talia Copoloff, Suyin Howard, and Ashley Herbert with sophomores Morgan Tenpenny, Audrey Crowson, as well as junior Andronika Dyer and seniors Catherine Bachovchin and Lauren Burright.
The regatta will consist of 19, division one teams with 4 ranked nationally by CRCA, including Big 12 opponent No. 14 UCF, the University of Tulsa, West Virginia, Old Dominion, and rivals Kansas State.
Kansas has been competing in Sarasota since the 2020-19 season with every Kansas boat seeing a top 5 finish in their respective final of last year's racing. The 2 Varsity 8+ and 1 Varsity 4+ teams saw first and fifth respectively in the B final, with 1 Varsity 4+ boat placing first in the C final. The 2 Varsity 4+ boat earned a second-best, Big 12 time of 7:45.84 to place runner-up. Other notable accomplishments include a victory by the 1 Varsity 8+ and 2 Varsity 8+ boat in 2022, with the 3 Varsity 8+ boat landing an overall third place podium finish in the regatta. The 2 Varsity 8+ boat also took second in 2022.
