LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas women's tennis team swept the Kansas City Roos (7-0) and Creighton Bluejays (4-0) in back-to-back duels in its home opener on Friday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
Kansas improves to 2-0 on the year for the program's best start since the 2019-2020 season.
"We got a lot of information today of where we're at and that's what you need this time of year to find out where you exactly are," head coach Todd Chapman said. "It's a quick turnaround and we've got a really good Iowa team coming in on Sunday, so we'll try to make some quick adjustments, but the biggest thing is just try to get as fresh as we can and as prepared as we can for a tough match on Sunday.
Despite dropping its first set, the No. 53 preseason ranked duo of Heike Janse Van Vuuren and Gracie Mulville swept the next six for a 6-1 victory. In the same fashion over on court two, Jasmine Adams and Kyoka Kubo also fell in the first set but recovered for their own 6-1 win to grant the Jayhawks their first point of the day for a 1-0 lead entering singles play.
Anna Putilina and Meriem Ben Ezzedine's match in No. 3 doubles went unfinished as they narrowly trailed 3-4.Â
In singles action, Kansas dominated all six of its matches over the Roos to seal the first contest of the day 7-0.
In No. 1 singles, Mulville took down her competition by twin scores of 6-2, 6-2. The only singles match to go into a decisive third set was Van Vuuren on court two as she battled to a 7-5, 6-7, 1-0 (10-7) victory. An All Big-12 Freshman Team pick last season, Kyoka Kubo opened up her sophomore year with a 6-3, 6-3 win. Adams swiftly won the No. 3 slot 6-1, 6-1 as freshmen Ben Ezzedine and Putilina both nabbed victories on their respective courts. Ben Ezzedine won 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 4 slot and Putilina had identical scores of 6-4, 6-1 in No. 6 singles to round out the first duel of the day.
Action returned to the Jayhawk Tennis Center later in the afternoon as Kansas hosted Creighton for its first contest against the Bluejays since 2000.
Court two wrapped up first as Kubo and Adams fell 6-1. After a two set deficit, Ben Ezzedine and Putilina rallied for six straight to even out the battle for the doubles point as they won court three, 6-2. Â
It was a back-and-forth contest in No. 1 doubles as Mulville and Van Vuuren traded sets with the Bluejays up until 5-5 to force a tie-breaker. The duo went on to secure a 7-5 victory and grant Kansas the doubles point heading into singles play.
Kubo picked up the second point of the evening with a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Maria Titova followed suit in her sole match of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court three for Kansas to go up 3-0. Pulitina clinched her match 6-2, 6-0 to secure the 4-0 Jayhawk victory for a double-sweep day.
The Ben Ezzedine, Van Vuuren and Mulville singles matches went unfinished.
