ORLANDO, Fla. – A historic run ended Friday morning as Kansas tennis All-American
Kyoka Kubo lost to California's Berta Passola Folch, 7-5, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the 2025 NCAA Championship at USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
"We couldn't be prouder of Kyoka," Kansas head coach
Todd Chapman said. "From where she was at the beginning of the fall with her tennis to where she is today is something she can be really proud of."
In advancing to the Round of 16 on Wednesday, Kubo, earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American status. Kubo, junior from Yokohama, Japan, becomes the first Kansas ITA All-American since two-time All-American Anastasia Rychagova in 2019. Rychagova also was a 2017 ITA All-American.
With her win over Duke's Irina Balus (6-4, 6-1) in the Round of 16 on Thursday, Kubo became the first Jayhawk since Kylie Hunt in 1996 to advance to the NCAA Championship quarterfinals.
"Kyoka experienced and conquered so many things this fall and this historic run this week is the culmination of a lot of hard work," Chapman said. "Kyoka is disappointed but as I just talked to her about after the match, the positives this week drastically outweigh her loss today. She leaves Orlando as a First Team All-American and has so much to look forward to with her tennis."
Kubo opened the NCAA Championship on Tuesday, Nov. 18, in the Round of 64, and defeated Kritina Paskauskas of Alabama (6-1, 4-6, 6-2).
