LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas women's tennis rolled to a 4-1 victory over #33 TCU on Friday night at the Jayhawk Tennis Center, securing Kansas' third ranked win of the season.
With the win, the Jayhawks improved to 10-7 (4-3 Big 12) this season, while TCU falls to 10-6 (5-2 Big 12). The win marked Kansas' third ranked win in Big 12 Conference with wins over #72 Colorado, #26 Arizona State and #33 TCU.
"It was extremely tough conditions tonight. It was very windy. Obviously not the greatest tennis conditions," head coach Todd Chapman said. "I was just super proud of the girls for responding and coming out and letting the doubles point go and not focusing on the wind and just competing hard. I think you saw that across all six courts in singles where we gave ourselves a chance to be successful and did a great job today of finishing matches, where we've struggled a little bit in the past. So it's great to see that growth and excited to compete against a really good Baylor team on Sunday."
Doubles action started first, as the Horned Frogs won the doubles point, winning two out of three matches. The Jayhawks won on court two, as Jasmine Adams and Yerkezhan Arystanbekova moved to 4-1 on the season with a 6-2 win over Helena Narmont and Yu-Chin Tsai. TCU won on courts one and three, as No. 18 Jade Otway and Isabel Pascual defeated Kansas' Gracie Mulville and Heike Janse van Vuuren 6-3 on court one and Raquel Caballero Chica and Tomi Main defeating Kyoka Kubo and Anna Putilina 7-5 on court three.Â
Kansas responded quickly in singles action, winning the first two matches. On court three, Kubo defeated Pascual in a 6-1, 6-0 sweep. Court four finished up second, as van Vuuren won against Tsai in a 6-1, 6-4 sweep.
The Jayhawks then got two more hard fought wins to win the match. On court one, No. 67 Mulville dropped the first set to Otway but rallied back to win the match in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. Court five won the match for Kansas, as Arystanbekova defeated Main in a 6-3, 7-5 sweep.
Two other matches went unfinished, as Maria Titova battled against Caballero Chico on court two in a close 4-6, 6-3, 1-5 match and Putilina faced off against Maya Drozd on court six in a tight 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 match.
