FORT WORTH, Texas –No. 63 Kansas took an early advantage against No. 19 TCU and closed a 4-3 win over the Horned Frogs on Friday evening. The win is the third straight for the Jayhawks, and the third ranked win of the season.
"What a great college tennis match," Kansas head coach Todd Chapman said. "It was a match full of momentum shifts and we hung in there long enough to pull it out. I'm proud of the girls for continuing to fight this season and tonight. Beating a top-20 team on the road isn't easy to do. We now will focus on Sunday and another tough matchup with Baylor."
Kansas improved to 7-6 (3-1 Big 12) this season, while TCU dropped to 10-2 (4-1 Big 12).
The Jayhawks started off strong in doubles play, picking up two wins to take the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead. On court one, Kansas' Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina took down TCU's Letizia Corsini and Victoria Gomez O'Hayon in a quick 6-2 match. Kansas took the point on court three, as Kyoka Kubo and Meriem Ben Ezzedine defeated Raquel Caballero Chica and Cristina Ramos Sierra in a 6-4 match.
TCU picked up one doubles win, with Cayetana Gay and Tomi Main picking up a win over Heike Janse van Vuuren and Meg McCarty with a score of 6-4.
The Jayhawks kept momentum going into singles play, winning courts one and two to take a commanding 3-0 lead. No. 45 Kubo picked up a ranked win over No. 80 Chica on court one with scores of 1-6, 6-0, 6-3. Van Vuuren continued her unbeaten winning streak to seven matches with a 6-4, 6-3 win over O'Hayon and is now 8-3 on the year in singles action.
TCU picked up three singles wins to tie the match at 3-3. On court three, Sierra defeated Arystanbekova 7-5, 3-6, 6-4; on court four, Gay took down Ben Ezzedine 5-7, 6-0, 6-2; and on court five, Tomi Main picked up a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over McCarty.
Kansas won the final singles match on court six to secure the 4-3 upset win. Putilina fell in the first set to Corsini 3-6, but won the final two sets 6-3, 6-2 to grab the win for the Jayhawks.
UP NEXT Kansas will stay in Texas as they will travel to Waco, Texas to take on the No. 44 Baylor Bears on Sunday, March 15. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. CT.
