WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Kansas women’s tennis completed the Purdue Invitational with a match of singles against Miami of Ohio in the Schwartz Tennis Center, Sunday. The invitational marks the end of the Jayhawks’ 2013-14 tournament slate and the opening of their dual-match action.
In additional tournament play, Kansas played Miami of Ohio in one match before both teams left the snowy Purdue Campus. KU played Miami of Ohio in singles on Friday, Jan. 17 to open the tournament. The Jayhawks found success against the Red Hawks in the first meeting and continued to shine in the second.
“I thought we played well as a whole today,” said Head Coach Todd Chapman. “It was a long, physical weekend, but it was exactly what we needed. I’m proud of how we competed and believe we’re a better team moving forward at this point.”
Maria Jose Cardona played Christina Raymond in singles for the second time. On Friday, Cardona easily ran past Raymond, but Sunday’s match proved more difficult as Cardona fell to Raymond, 6-3. Maria Belen Ludueña took on Andreea Badileanu for the first time and swiftly defeated her, 6-1. Paulina Los grabbed another win against Christine Guerazzi (6-1) as did her teammate, Anastasija Trubica who downed Ramona Costea (6-2). Freshmen Morgan Barnhill also defeated her opponent, Diana Suarez (6-1) to finish her first collegiate tennis invitational.
“We have 12 days to prepare for our opening match against Nebraska,” said Chapman. “We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
Kansas will open dual-match action against former Big 12-rival No. 25 Nebraska, in Lincoln, Neb. at the Nebraska Tennis Center, Jan. 31 at 4 p.m.
