2014 Winter Training Blog: Tessa Scott

TAMPA – Temperatures on the Kansas River can make preseason training a challenge, so the Kansas rowing team uses the opportunity to travel to warmer climates to get the Jayhawks ready to race in the spring. This year’s trip finds the team in Tampa, Fla., for 10 days of training. Throughout the week, KUAthletics.com and members of the rowing team will catalog the trip. The second of five winter training trip blogs features sophomore Tessa Scott.

“From the time we left Tampa last winter, I have been counting down the days until I could finally breathe in the fresh Florida air once again. Now that we are here, I just can’t get enough.”

“Winter training is a very unique time for our team because we are constantly together. Whether it’s on the water, in the cafeteria or in the hotel, we are always surrounded by other teammates. Since the novice are most always with Coach Jen (Myers) back home, it’s not as easy for older girls like me to get to know them. I am rooming with a freshman and have also made it a point at meals to sit with girls that I don’t usually talk to.  This has allowed me to make new friends and has given me the opportunity to offer up some advice.”

“Our amazing team chemistry is really built on the water. When we do difficult pieces in practice, we are all doing them together. We give each other encouragement and support on the water and that creates a stronger bond within our team. As a first year member of the varsity squad, I’m experiencing a more intensive training trip that comes with higher expectations from my coaches. I can feel our team getting faster and stronger with every practice. Being removed from everyday distractions has allowed us to get to know our teammates and develop speed that we will utilize and take full advantage of in the spring.”
